PLEASE allow me through your letters column to say a big thank you to all the staff at Stepping Stone Hospice and Care Services for the amazing support and care that was given to my husband, Gerhardus van der Westhuizen, in the days leading up to his passing on December 14 last year.
I have never experienced such kindness and loving care, not only shown to him, but to me and our children. Gogga (as I used to call him) was diagnosed with melanoma cancer. I registered him with Stepping Stone in August last year. Early December he was admitted to the in-patient unit at Stepping Stone Hospice in New Market Park after it became just too much for me to care for him alone at home.
I want the whole community to know about my experience at hospice. From day one, he was cared for 24 hours a day by a dedicated team of medical staff. There was always someone next to his bed holding his hand and on the day of his passing the staff were all in his room singing Amazing Grace as we, the family, were saying our goodbyes.
Every time I would walk into the unit, I was greeted with a hug and treated with the utmost respect. I also noticed that at night when families have gone home, there was always a staff member sitting with the patients in their rooms. The patients really were never alone and I wish to thank Dr Rodrigues, Sister Sheryl, Sister Engela and all the staff for living up to their motto that states “You are not alone.” I have experienced this and I really don’t know how else to express my deep felt gratitude to these “angels”.
Thank you hospice, for the wonderful work you do. I urge you, if you or a loved one, suffer from a life-limiting illness, please don’t hesitate to contact them. It truly is a life-changing experience.
Many thanks.
Vina van der Westhuizen, Alberton
