Inside Report with Michael Bash: In with the new

I have shifted my perspective from seeing the negative news, to seeing only the positive outcomes

Ah, a new year, a fresh perspective for the coming days and months.

I am hopeful for 2016; I truly believe that it will be an epic year. Granted 2015 ended in tragedy with our economy being one of the victims, but I did have a chance to see things from a different perspective.

Over the holidays, I was fortunate enough to have some friends from Austria stay with me and it was watching their adventures in our beautiful country that really got me thinking.

You see, here were two foreigners loving the exchange rate – and by that I mean loving the exchange rate. They did it all, the wine route, Durban, Pongola, Sabie, Sun City, and the list goes on. I, on the other hand, was at home lamenting the fall of the Rand, wondering what ill fate lies ahead for our embattled country. Fear and worry make terrible bedfellows. They trap you into a line of thinking that is dark and miserable.

It wasn’t until I sat with the Austrians and listened to the tales of their adventures that it dawned upon me: in crisis there is opportunity!

Here were two foreigners telling me how great my country is, how awesome the people are and how incredible the food is. To them the fall of the Rand is a gift, to us a curse, but still to them a gift.

They had the chance to have the holiday of a lifetime and that means spending money. Tourism is one of the great opportunities that a crisis like this can bring. Manufacturing for export is another, a weaker Rand means higher profit through a competitive price point.

It was this that made me stop and smile, because if you really believe in it, visualise it and start to live it, 2016 can be an epic year. If there is crisis, there is opportunity, find yours and seize it.

I have shifted my perspective from seeing the negative news, to seeing only the positive outcomes. I truly believe that this year will change this country, and my wish is that everyone finds their passion, their drive and their goals to make this the best year of any year that has been before.
