Allies undefeated in NWU Vaal Super Series
Hoërskool Alberton was made to fight hard for a second successive win in the NWU Vaal Super Series when they defeated a spirited Hans Moore team 15-12 in a closely contested game played on Saturday, March 12, in Alberton.
It was at times, not the most exciting rugby especially in the first-half but after half-time, it became a really good contest.
The visitors started off extremely well and had better attacking opportunities, but strong defence by the home side as well as the final pass not going to hand, resulted in them having nothing to show for their efforts.
Alberton weathered the storm and when one of the Hans Moore players was sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes for backchatting, they seized the opportunity and slotted the resulting penalty to lead 3-0.
Alberton gradually got more into their stride and good pressure on the Hans Moore backline led to Alberton scoring their first try through Jimmy Dadswell. The try was converted by Francois Myburgh to put Alberton 10-0 in the lead.
But to their credit, Hans Moore never gave up and was rewarded with a try of their own. The conversion meant there were only three points in it at 10-7.
In the second half the visitors’ back three really picked up the pace and looked very dangerous running from the back. The Alberton defence was also good and their counter-attacking was impressive resulting in the second half being a good spectacle. The home side scored first through Jonothan Potgieter to stretch the lead to 12-7.
Hans Moore never went to lie down and had it not been for a few missed kicks, might have taken the lead when they scored their second try after a defensive error by the hosts. The conversion missed and there was only three points in it at 15-12.
The home team did enough to hang on after the restart to clinch victory to remain unbeaten but to be fair Hans Moore, at least deserved to get a draw out of the game.
