Albertonian wins best sports administrator prize

Alberton resident Vicky Magu won the Gauteng Sports Administrator of the year award for 2015/2016, at Birchwood on March 4.

ALBERTON resident Vicky Magu won the Gauteng Sports Administrator of the Year award for 2015/2016, at Birchwood on March 4.

Vicky serves as executive of Gauteng Chess, Gauteng School’s Chess, represents Chess SA at Sports and Recreation South Africa and is the national convenor of SA Schools Chess.

He has worked in the development and promotion of chess, especially among the youth, since the early 2000s, and has represented South Africa as a team manager at many continental and international chess events over the years.

“It was an honour to win the Administrator of the Year award this year, after being amongst the finalists for 2013 and 2014 as well. A big thank you to my mentor and best friend, Mike Pon, for his guidance and support and thank you to the executive of Chess SA, Chess SA Youth Commission, Gauteng Chess, Gauteng Sports Confederation, the Gauteng Department of Education, Gauteng Department of Sport and Recreation, the Gauteng Schools Chess committee, my family and friends,” said Vicky.
