Mayor finishes Comrades

Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor, Cllr Mondli Gungubele is over the moon after maintaining his 100 percent record in the Comrades’ Marathon.

EKURHULENI Executive Mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele is over the moon after maintaining his 100 percent record in the Comrades’ Marathon.

Gungubele managed to finish this year’s edition of the Comrades with seven minutes to spare on the cut-off time of 12 hours.

“I am quite excited. This was a tough race and as I was approaching Durban all I could think of was another medal. I had a niggling knee injury coming to this race and I was worried about it bothering me as I ran, but fortunately there was very little discomfort.

“I am just over the moon for having annexed seven medals out of seven races,” said an elated Gungubele upon finishing the race. “There are runners who have participated in this marathon more than 10 times yet could not get as many medals. So I am fortunate for this hundred percent record.”

Gungubele said he will soon be starting preparations for next year’s race because, he said, “I plan to run this race for as long as I feel strong.”
