PEARS are a great source of fibre and contains minerals and vitamins which contribute to a healthy and balanced diet. While pears can be enjoyed as a fresh healthy snack, it can also be preserved in cans and used for baking. Quinton Moster, store manager at Food Lover’s Market at Mall @ Newmarket, has given us tips on the best ways to select and store pears.
When purchasing pears select the firm ones but make sure they are not too hard.
To hasten the ripening of pears, place them in a brown bag and store at room temperature. A
Always see that the skin of a pear is smooth and has no bruises. Pears which have dark or soft spots are ripe and won’t last long.
Pears can be stored in the refrigerator in order for them to stay fresh for a few days.
Pears should be stored away from other strong-smelling foods, as they tend to absorb smells.
