Powerbox smokes

We cannot live like this. We have been waiting patiently for assistance, but nothing happens.

We have been having problems with our main electricity box in Leon Street, Eden Park.

First our power just went on and off for a while on Monday, February 6 and by Tuesday the power was completely off and it affected house number 8 Leon Street and number 12 Leon Street. The resident of house number 12 reported this incident and she dialled 0860 0543 000.

By Wednesday the box started to smoke and this affected two more houses.

The resident of house number 8 also called the number 0860 0543 000 and they gave her the query number 2363540.

Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan spokesperson, commented as follows:

“Technicians did respond to the calls on various occasions. Power to all affected houses was fully restored on Saturday, February 11.

“There are a number of illegal connections made in the box and these unlawful activities contribute to frequent outages.

“It was also discovered that rising groundwater affected the box and it was this water that caused the smoke seen by the residents.

“We will need to replace the box with a protective structure and higher plinth to address the issue of illegal connections and to curb the problem of rising groundwater affecting the metering installations inside the box.

“Once a protective structure gets installed, all the existing meters will be replaced with prepayment meters.”
