Inside Report with Basch: Cry our beloved country

If you had come to me two years ago and told me that in the next five to ten years Nigeria would become the largest economy in Africa, I would probably have laughed.

Truth be told at the current rate of investment Nigeria surely will be the next powerhouse of Africa leaving us to live off the scraps.

We are well into strike season having just gone through the petrol attendant’s strike and the metal workers strike and soon I believe that the municipal workers will be embarking on a strike. It is unbelievable the damage that these industrial actions are having on our countries economy. Investor confidence is at an all time low, well perhaps I should say honest, good investors are not enjoying the environment in our country. The dishonest and shady investors are loving us right now because we are a country for sale.

There is a general sense of apathy among our communities at the moment, with the dreaded negative sentiment of “ what difference will it make” setting in fast. And it is completely understandable, one merely needs to watch the news at night to see the decay of corruption and greed masked as workers rights eating away at our moral. We have unions stating that the problem is our imperialist capitalism that is eroding the economy. They would have us become a communist state all under the control of the government. Nationalize the mines, the farms and big business because that will free us from economic oppression. Because that has worked so well in the past, show me one country that has actually benefited from a communist regime? Some point to China and say, ‘see they are communists with the second biggest economy in the world’, well yes but are they really communists? Or are they capitalists with no human rights?

We have become a society of unrealistic expectations built on half-truths and fuelled by greed. But fear not my readers for all is not lost, we can turn it around, and we can have an accountable government that actually focuses on delivery. We can resurrect the soul of our land and regain our title as the star of Africa but only you can do this. Only you and your family and your friends, neighbours, colleagues and community can breathe life back into our country and that is through your vote. Choose your path, choose your leader but ultimately vote for the future of your country.
