I read with interest your article, “Eagle breeding fails,” about the decline in their (dassies) natural prey.
We stay in Alberante, adjacent to the Reading golf course and we have had a dassie in our yard for several months. The dassie has been eating leaves from the trees and our lawn. I’ve also noted when I walk around our area that there are other dassies in our area.
Perhaps the dassies are moving towards the suburbs. Maybe the Reading Country Club can have an eagle breeding program implemented as there won’t be a shortage of dassies.
On the other hand, it might not be a good idea since the eagles may be interested in our cats – easy prey as they often go onto roofs.
Alternatively, we welcome the eagle caretakers to put up a trap in our yard to catch the dassie and relocate them to Klipriversberg.
