VIDEO: Open-water swimmers challenged by choppy waters
Over 2 200 swimmers from Johannesburg and around the country competed in the Dis-Chem Sun City swim.
OVER 2 200 swimmers from all over Johannesburg and the country flocked to the choppy waters of the 20th edition of the 2017 Dis-Chem Sun City swim, which took place on October 21.
This open-water event kicked off the 2017/2018 open-water season.
Tough competition was the order of the day in the 3 000m and 1 500m events, which included men, women, boys and girls.

A 600m fun swim also attracted most of the swimmers after the ‘serious’ swimming.
Little Eden Society, Kidney Beanz Trust, Gauteng Lifesaving and Masters swimming in South Africa were the beneficiaries of the Dis-Chem Sun City swim.
It was a day of fun for the whole family as sponsors made it an entertaining and enjoyable event.
Chad Michau was first to reach the shores in the men’s section in a time of 34:45 in the 3 000m, while Henre Louw made it in second place with a time of 35:09.

Samantha Randle came first in the women’s section in a time of 38:41, while Jessica Whelan trailed her in a time of 39:39.
In the women’s 1 500m, Hannah Robertson was home in 20:10 and Luca Douw and Hamar Holtzhauzen completed the same distance in 18:55.
The event was initiated in 1998 by a group of open-water swimmers from Gauteng Masters swimming.
Funds raised through the entry fees, donations and sponsorships are used to make a difference in the community.
