Alberton players excel at Barbarians 10’s

The Alberton Madalas also entered a team, and as usual they did not disappoint their fans.

ON Saturday, November 18, the Gauteng Barbarians hosted its first ever Veterans 10’s Rugby Tournament at Kibler Park Recreation Centre.

The tournament served as a fundraiser for the Gauteng Barbarians, a veterans 10’s team made up of players from different clubs across Gauteng. They regularly play invitational games, but their main focus is definitely the Zando Cape Town 10’s that takes place in February each year.

After coming third in this year’s Cape Town 10’s, the Barbarians entered the Tshwane 10’s in August and came second in the Cup final, only losing by a close margin to a very strong International Legends team.

The team is already gearing up for next year’s Cape Town 10’s, which promises to be bigger than ever as it is the 10th anniversary of the event.

Saturday’s event in Kibler Park was a huge success, with 19 teams playing in both the Oldies or Veterans and Open Club sections. The spectators were entertained by some very exciting 10’s rugby involving teams across Gauteng.

The Alberton Madalas also entered a team, and as usual they did not disappoint their fans.

The Madalas drew their first game against the Broodspan, a team made up of club players that have mostly retired, with each side notching up four tries.

Facing the Eastern Gladiators, a very strong team from the East Rand, in their second game, the Madalas triumphed by four tries to three.

The try scorers were Pieter Botha, Pieter Claasen, Danie Putter and Anton Vlok.
