Academy bids farewell to Sensei

This was also the academy’s 30th birthday celebration. These two inspiring leaders have been with the academy for just as long.

THE Alberton Scout Hall housed this year’s annual awards ceremony for the Shin-Gi-Tai Karate Academy.

It was a bittersweet occasion as they bade farewell to Sensei Llewellyn Oosthuizen and Rodukan Veronica van den Heever. This was also the academy’s 30th birthday celebration, and these two inspiring leaders have been with the academy for just as long.

After many impressive karate demonstrations from the learners, everyone received prizes for their hard work and dedication throughout the year. Then it was time for Sensei and Rodukan to give their farewell speeches.

KARATEKAS: Everyone from the academy who received awards posed for a photo.

Sensei Llewellyn gave a long speech, mentioning some of the highlights and memorable moments of his time at the academy. He thanked everyone for their friendship and support and wished them all the best for the future.

Rodukan Veronica did not really give a speech, as she was battling to hold back the tears. She gave thanks to everyone and concluded with a tearful “goodbye”.

PERFORMING: Learners show off their well-rehearsed karate routines together.

At least these two will still be a part of the academy, so it’s not the last that will be seen of them. They’ll still pop in during the week to guide the elderly students with their lessons.

The event concluded after a memorial slideshow was projected on the wall for attendees to watch. Here, one could see all the articles that the RECORD has written about the academy over the past 30 years.

After all the formalities, the event closed off with finger-snacks and tea. Farewell, Sensei and Rodukan!
