Sewage continues to be a problem

My husband and I have already cleared two green dirt boxes of human waste from our property due to the council's "clean up crews" not coming out.

Your article dated 6 December 2017 refers.

I would like to sympathise with the residents of Kolossie Street and say to them that many of us are in the same boat as they are.

We live just a few streets down from them and we have also had endless problems with sewage.

The council has come out and cleared the lines many times, but this is not a solution to the problems we as residents in Neville Street are experiencing.

They clear the lines and the same night we have heavy rains and the water from the stormwater drains then washes back and this causes our drains to come up and overflow into our property.

We have been told on many occasions that the pipe in the street is too small and needs to be replaced. It has been years now that we have had to put up with this problem and nothing has been done by the council except them cleaning the drains which do not help.

We have reported this overflow problem to Hendrik Groenwalt at the EMM; also we have phoned Mduduzi Shabangu and spoke to his secretary and she assured us the problem would be highlighted as being urgent.

Again, nothing has happened except that the drains have been cleared. We have also reported this matter to our ward councillor, hoping that he would get involved, but to no avail. In all, we have sent out plus minus 23 emails and photos of the situation to try and get someone to come out and see what the problem is and do something once and for all to fix this problem. From November 25 until December 7 we have logged a total of 11 requests with the call center.

My husband and I have already cleared two green dirt boxes of human waste from our property due to the council’s “clean up crews” not coming out.

We have now also resorted to trying to alleviate the problem for ourselves by getting the sewage to run off the property when the rains come and the drains overflow. This is not a solution to the problem but we are forced to take steps ourselves. We have lost one of my dogs this year due to liver failure which could have been due to the waste on the premises.

Our neighbour also has his drains coming up and the sewage flows freely from his drains and the breather pipe on the property. Other people in the street are also having the same problems at their properties. I feel this situation we have in this area is disgusting; we are after all paying our rates and taxes monthly and not getting any service from the people whose salaries we are helping to pay.

Very fed up resident
