Reynard Butler dominates Dis-Chem Ride for Sight

The excellent time of 2:39:55 is what it took Reynard Butler of the Team ProTouch to conquer the 116km during this year’s 30th edition of the Dis-Chem Ride for Sight.

Boksburg Stadium was abuzz with a strong presence of the top cyclist in South Africa competing off the back of the SA Road Champs and Time Trials lead to some exciting racing, on February 18. The 116km Super Classic event saw numerous attempted breaks from the main bunch.

Gaps were closed within a few kilometres. At 10km to go, the last two breakaway riders were caught by the peleton, which lead to a bunch sprint. Butler took the sprint from Nolan Hoffman and Shameeg Salie.

The ladies event was won by Carla Oberholzer in a time of 3:40:07 with Jo van de Winkel second and Mandy de Beer taking 3rd place. The strong wind and high temperatures made racing extremely difficult for the ladies to make a break. Oberholzer’s teammate, Heidi Dalton, set up the win for Oberholzer close to the finish.

Meanwhile, to restore the gift of sight, all proceeds from the event, sponsored by Dis-Chem Pharmacies and proudly hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni, will go towards finding treatment for retinal blindness.

The event has raised over R10-million over the last 30 years to fund genetic research at the University of Cape Town. Young South Africans affected by retinal degenerative disorders such as Retinitis Pigmentosa, Stargardt disease and allied conditions stand to gain from promising clinical trials that are treating these rare but devastating forms of vision loss.
