Bridge the Gap

My passion for Alberton and our community was one of the reasons why I became a community activist and eventually a community leader.

It is, however, shocking how apathetic people have become towards Alberton. There is a culture of complaining about things rather than finding solutions for the problems. In Ekurhuleni people complain daily about leaking pipes, faulty water meters, broken street lights and power interruptions, but very few people actually take the time to report these problems.

If the municipality is not aware of the problem we cannot fix it. Municipal infrastructure cannot repair itself and interruptions require the attention of dedicated Ekurhuleni officials in the services departments to do repairs. Non-reporting of Municipal service interruptions has become a Metro wide problem and to “bridge this gap” Ekurhuleni has introduced a dedicated number to report municipal service interruptions.

The number for municipal service interruptions is 0860 54 3000. I would like to urge residents to report service delivery interruptions – especially if it has not been repaired for a few days. Residents can also follow Ekurhuleni on @EMM_Call_Centre for service delivery and repair updates.

Together we can improve service delivery and create a better life for all in Ekurhuleni. Ekurhuleni is a participatory local government and residents can participate in having their voices heard by registering to vote.

This coming weekend has been declared a voter registration weekend and various voting stations across Alberton will be open to allow people to register on the voters roll. My eight-year-old daughter Mikayla asked why do I vote? I said to her that it gives me a say on important issues that affect our every day life – everything from roads and recycling in our area, to education and climate change.

You can only vote if you are registered on the voters roll. You may think you don’t want to vote now, but if an issue comes up that you want to have your say on, if you’re on the register you’ll have the chance to vote on it. Remember, it is the right of every South African to have their say on who will govern our beautiful country and create a better life for all.

Lets’ bridge the Gap and encourage all Albertonians to register to vote. Please e-mail me with your municipal questions Diamond.Neil@ekurhuleni.gov.za.
