Dinamika pipped by Bastion
Bastion was next to score a converted try to give them a 10 - 7 lead at halftime.
HOËRSKOOL Dinamika hosted Hoërskool Bastion on May 5 in Alberton in their opening match of the Golden Lions League.
It was always going to be a tough, physical match as the Bastion side have a very big pack of forwards. Even the backline players are big. Namies, on the other hand, rely on craft and speed.
Dinamika started slowly and it was clear that the Bastion pack were going to use the size and weight advantage even in the rolling mauls. One such maul happened after Namies set up an attacking line-out a few metres from the try line. Bastion won their own ball and set up a rolling maul that took them 10m past the 22m line. Namies was penalised for bringing the maul down, but they had to stop them. The way Bastion was travelling at a rate of knots, they could almost have gone try line to try line.
But Dinamika did the right thing and used their speedy backs to good effect. Their fly half Ronaldo van Rooyen contributed much putting through clever chip and grubber kicks, one in particular just bouncing wrong evading both the defender and the Dinamika attacker.
Dinamika were first to score with a super try by scrum half Jason Wagner who broke from a scrum, pinned his ears back and left everyone behind.
Van Rooyen and Wagner make an impressive pair. They have a good understanding. With the conversion succeeding, Dinamika was put in the lead as Bastion had been successful with a penalty early on.
The game ebbed and flowed from there and involved some huge hits, especially in the back line, from both teams. There were surely some sore bodies the next day.
Bastion was next to score a converted try to give them a 10 – 7 lead at halftime.
Namies scored again in the second half through Christiaan Maree, with Van Rooyen again adding the extra two points to take the lead 14 – 10. From there they just had to hang on for the last quarter of the game.
Both teams must be complimented on the tackling. Both teams attacked well and the game was played at a frenetic pace. With the last move of the game, Bastion managed to crash over the line and snatched victory away from a brave Dinamika side.
Namies had their chances and would have pulled it through but for the odd tactical error. One place I feel they let it slip was not taking three points when they were on offer. On at least three occasions they went for the line out instead. But then they missed the touch kick twice. All in all it was not a bad performance though.
