Box Office marching ahead

Talisman Foundation training at the Box Office.

FOR 10 years the Box Office situated at Southern Suburbs Recreation Centre has been a hive of activity boasting several sporting codes.

The main attraction at the gymnasium is, of course, boxing and other combat sports which includes classes for self-defence and more.

Anton Gilmore and his Box Office trainers have also been working tirelessly among people from underprivileged communities to enhance their lifestyle by providing training in these codes to uplift them.

In addition, he has offered his services to Talisman Foundation, a psychosocial rehabilitation centre and a non-profit organisation in Southern Johannesburg.

Areas the gym addresses are anger management, discipline, respect and dignity where the individual, whether they are young or older, can be developed to the greatest possible extent.

Some of Talisman Foundations residents have found great benefit from training in Gilmore’s programme.

Mike Seeger said, “Boxing as a sport is immensely popular throughout the world. Everyone has different reasons to love the sport. Each one has their own experience and feelings, but I thank Anton (Gilmore) and his team for teaching us the art of boxing. Boxing gets me moving and exercising, and teaches me teamwork as well as defence. My coaches have shown what boxing is all about, teaching myself and others the skills in boxing. Box Office gym is like a family, where everyone is respected.”

Basil Phyfer, another member of the foundation who feels the gym has impacted his life and training, said, “My experience is that in the last nine months my confidence has increased and coach Anton not only teaches the art of boxing but also about life and to do good to others.”

A formally abused woman, Tiffany van den Berg, said that the programme gives her power and confidence after years of abuse. It also helps her recovery within the foundation.

It has been established that the programme influences youth not to engage in underage sex, smoking, drug abuse and drinking of alcohol. Sixty per cent have started going to church and 70 per cent have improved their school marks.

The beauty of this programme is it provides structure and discipline for the individual concerned.

Box Office also provides the hiring of a trailer, including 40 bags, medicine balls, gloves and mats and a personal trainer.
