[GALLERY + VIDEOS]: Followers of God walks 90km from Alberton to Bronkhorstspruit carrying a cross

Their journey embarked on October 24 at 7am and ended on October 27.

FIVE followers of God from Alberton walked 90km carrying a cross from Alberton to the Rhino Park Airfield in Bronkhorstspruit (Pretoria) to attend the It’s Time event.

Their journey embarked on October 24 at 7am and ended on October 27. Donovan Cogill, Christo Pieterse, Harvey Malope, Tony de Oliveira and Schalk Coetzee left Alberton on foot with the cross and their bags packed with personal belongings.

They walked with a 3.6m x 2.4m pine wood cross that weighed about 35kg.

“About three months ago I received a message from God saying that I need to build a cross and walk with it to take it to the Angus Buchan event on October 27 and to take back the land (people) we met on our way to Him,” said Pieterse.

They also had a different T-shirt for each day with a special word which was made by Shilo Gifts.

Breaking bread

“On our journey we did Love Feasts, some planned and some spontaneous, with those we met and it was amazing,” said Pieterse.

A Love Feast is an opportunity to love, to share and to be generous to each other while sharing a meal and fellowship. According to Pieterse, it’s one thing to give someone food, but to break bread and share a meal with someone means so much more and has a much bigger impact.

“Just imagine if we all lived this way.

“This is our journey. We left Alberton and made our way to Carnival City and then we ended off in Daveyton Township where we did a Love Feast at a local church with pastors and leaders there. The aim is to promote unity in the community and among church leaders,” he said.

Their cross broke on their way to Daveyton, but the community of Daveyton helped them fix it.

Hard to believe

“This journey can’t be explained in words as it was breathtaking. God showed us so many great things and I just have a new way of believing in Him. We are so excited and expectant of what God is going to do in and through the lives of others,” said Pieterse.

They left without any plans, but every day there was someone new on their path who bought them food and water and gave them a place to sleep.

“Each morning we had a ‘treasure hunt’ where we prayed to God to sent us names of the people in need.

“It is difficult to understand if you were not there yourself, but it all happened. So each day we came across the people we prayed for, those names we asked for. Through Go we did a lot of healings, blessings, sharing, caring and loving on this journey. God opened up places for us as well as people’s hearts.”

The Love Feast journey began three months ago where the followers went out in the Alberton community and surrounding areas to interact with communities and to bring them together.

Thank you

“We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who, in some way or form, was involved in this initiative. To our families who supported us as we took on this walk, to our wives who stayed behind and looked after our children, we salute you – you are the real heroes. Thank you and we love you,” was the message from Cogill, Pieterse, Malope, De Oliveira and Coetzee.

“Just remember that God is a lover, a giver and no matter how rich or poor you are, if you believe or not, He believes in you.”

On November 4 there will be a Testimony Sunday at Kardia Family Church in 4 Burger Street in Suideroord from 9am. These five men will give a testimony about their journey. Everyone is welcome. People can bring food for themselves and some extra to share for the Love Feast straight after the service.
