Alberton Madalas reign at Diggers

When the Madalas attack or counter-attack, they are clinical and deadly.

THE Alberton Madalas Golden Oldies Rugby Club had a great start to the year at their first festival played at Diggers on February 9. With club captain Danie Putter at the wheel, the Madalas and the older-legends teams were unbeaten on the day.

The Madalas team played against the team from JHB police, the Bobbies. Neither side was scared to stand their ground, as both teams have sporting players who have played at club level for either the first or second team.

ESCAPE: Andries Labuschagne breaks a tackle to score the last try of the game.

The Madalas are a strong team with players who really stand out. What makes the Madalas’ set-up really good is that they can play almost any position on the field without losing momentum. This is why they are so strong when it comes to national festivals.

Danie Putter rotated his captains of the day. On this occasion it was scrumhalf Harry Boonzaaier. Danie is of the view that Harry is the strongest tackler in the team.

CLOSE CALL: Johan Edwards is strong for the defence and runs away for a try.

The Bobbies put pressure on the Madalas from the outset and were first to score after a defensive error by the Alberton side, but the Madalas soon hit back with tries by Anton Vlok and Johan Edwards. Although it was still tight from there, the Madalas never looked back.

In the end, the final score was 5-3 in the Madalas’ favour. They pride themselves on their defence and, although they don’t have the Lions’ share of territory or possession, they never leak soft tries. Furthermore, when the Madalas attack or counter-attack, they are clinical and deadly.

RUNNING TO SCORE: Danie Putter runs in to get a try.

The Bobbies team must be complimented, though, for their rugby skills and good spirit.

The next festival will take place in Benoni on February 23 at Hans Moore High School. The Alberton teams will play at 3pm and 4pm respectively.
