A while back, the Democratic Alliance (DA) had a poster stating something in the lines of, “Apartheid is over, get over it!” Those may not be the exact words but the message could not be truer.
Both white and black South Africans need to get over the fact that the country has progressed since 1994. We cannot afford to keep dwelling on the past just because we are not happy with the current situation.
It is time to let go and aim high! It is time to ditch the past and aim for a brighter future.
White South Africans cannot keep saying things like, “Things were better under the Apartheid government,” or “The government is taking the country down.” This tone is not coming up with solutions or being objective about the situation, it only fills you with a lot of anger and bitterness.
At the same time, black South Africans should also stop playing victim and start taking ownership of the country which is as much as theirs as it is for any other South African, irrespective of the colour of their skin.
We need to let go of the past before we can aim for a future we all desire. Our immediate needs; being quality services and being treated with respect instead of being bullied around just because there is an election to win, need to be addressed truthfully and without prejudice.
You must not be driven by race, but rather be driven by the possibility of a better South Africa; an efficient government.
Letting go of the past is not disrespecting what our former leaders did to get us to a place where we are today; we can only honour the past by taking responsibility of our future. Spending time blaming the past and present will end us nowhere but in deeper pain.
We have to look forward, aim for a South Africa not plagued by racial issues but the possibility of living in a better country. If you feel the ANC has failed, do not be afraid to change your vote; there is no point in voting for a party which has done nothing to give you the possibility of better governance.
Spending time blaming the past and present will end us nowhere but in deeper pain.
Do not vote because of its previous leaders, vote for the party looking at its current leadership. Do not for a party because you ‘do not want a white man to rule’. You must not be driven by race, but rather be driven by the possibility of a better South Africa; an efficient government.
It is time to let go and aim high! It is time to ditch the past and aim for a brighter future.
