Are traffic lights the best solution?

I overlook the traffic light at the bottom of True North Road, there has never been more accidents at that intersection since the erection of the lights.

I have read your article regarding the speed trapping on Orpen Road (Comaro CHRONICLE, June 26, page 4 and online). I think it’s a very feeble attempt at law enforcement.

I have travelled that road every day for the last 16 years and I ask the simple question: Why have JMPD not done anything in the last 16 years?

Secondly, the JMPD licence inspectors have done nothing but sit at the circle near Builders or down the hill near the Ford dealership doing nothing but checking for licences. It seems as if it’s easier to get money from “mom taxi drivers” who may have left her licence at home in the rush to fetch the children. Why has it taken a death to do something?

Now I see there are traffic lights being erected! With South Africa’s other national sport of ignoring red lights, well the next death is on its way, let me explain. That traffic light is on a bit of a blind rise to anybody exiting Tiago Shopping Centre, so my prediction is an innocent shopper will have gone to buy a takeaway from this centre and will get T-boned by somebody who’s going to chance his arm by ignoring the first three seconds of the red light.

My bet is a lunch on me if it doesn’t happen in the next three months! I overlook the traffic light at the bottom of True North Road, there has never been more accidents at that intersection since the erection of the lights. Why? Because people don’t stop at red lights … and once a month I see red and blue lights picking up the pieces.

I am passionate about road accidents and I have driven cars, trucks, bicycles and still drive race cars, but what’s happening on our roads right now is simply criminal.

I wish the press would tackle the JMPD on moving violations as opposed to being licence inspectors. When last did you see somebody being pulled over for running a light? I dare say not in the last five years.
