Alberton Sport history: Hockey looks back to 25 years ago

AT the end of the previous hockey season, it is time to reflect on the year which was a very good one all round for Alberton Hockey Club, with especially the men’s hockey team in exceptional good form

ALBERTON – All three Alberton teams finished within the top three. Five Alberton women made it into the country district’s side. Alberton junior hockey also had a bumper year, with the big tournament at Alberton as the ultimate highlight.

This month 25 years ago, Alberton Hockey Club awarded their outstanding achievers for 1989; Frikkie Minnie with the highest achievement award and Dale Shepherd highest award were top of the hockey class of 1989. Lorraine Cross and Peter van Boekel were the best women’s and best men’s players respectively. The top juniors 25 years ago were Lizelle Fourie (girls) and G Anderson (boys).

The names of Marietjie Skinner, club award, Ferene Bauman, most improved men’s player, and Linda Scrooby, most improved women’s player, must bring back big memories in hockey circles.
