As part of their clean-up campaign, members of a Palm Ridge Muslim community took it upon themselves to clean the graves of their loved ones.

The organisation, Masjid Quwwatul Islam Burial, took the initiative to conduct cleaning campaigns at Palm Ridge and Kromvlei cemeteries. About 50 people attended the clean-up where they assisted in filling up soil in the graves, cut grass and overgrown weeds.

Being their second clean-up campaign, it was declared a success by organisers due to a positive turnout from both young and old that came through on the day.

Ahmed Ismael, of Masjid Quwwatul Islam Burial, said through the clean-up they wanted to restore dignity to their loved ones’ resting place.

“In our religion if someone walks over the grave it’s considered as a sign of disrespect, and we want to clean these graves so that they are visible, even at night. We are not in competition with Council, this just shows our commitment to taking care of the deceased,” said Ismael.

He also said that youngsters were inspired, and that the clean-up was an opportunity to bring some positive contribution.

Shuaib Rajah, a coordinator of the organisation, thanked everyone who became part of the clean-up campaign.

“We would like to thank the community and sponsors of Palm Ridge that assisted us in making the campaign a success. To the youth, we appreciate all the effort, time and energy that you invested in this,” he said.
