Horse racing will continue with no public attendance

All future race days thereafter will be assessed according to the prevailing conditions and a decision communicated in due course.

The announcement regarding South Africa’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, made on March 15 by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his address on national television, refers.

Phumelela issued a statement saying, “In order to ensure that all South Africans are protected from being exposed to the coronavirus, we regrettably announce that whilst horse racing will continue, no public events will be hosted on course henceforth.

“This status quo will continue until at least the end of the Easter holidays, but may also be extended as per the government’s further instructions.”

It will affect the following race days which have subsequently been postponed:

• The Klawervlei Soccer Race Day scheduled for March 28 at Kenilworth, and

• The Joburg Prawn Festival scheduled for April 4 at Turffontein.

Patrons are requested to keep an eye on our social media platforms for updates and further information regarding revised dates.

All future race days thereafter will be assessed according to the prevailing conditions and a decision communicated in due course.

While the situation is unfortunate, Phumelela appreciates and respects the government’s response in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus and the need to ensure and protect the jockeys, trainers, grooms, racegoers and all members of the industry.

Only those individuals who are providing essential services on race days may attend and extensive hygiene measures will be put in place. Owners are encouraged to watch from home – those who wish to attend may do so, but proceed at their own risk.
