The Great Trek formed part of Alberton History
The Great Trek was a movement of people that did not want to be controlled by the British
The first expedition to this district (Alberton) was in 1836 by Hendrik Potgieter. One of the streets in Alberton is named after him.
THE Great Trek was a movement of people that wanted to escape from the control of the British. This occurred during the 1830’s and 1840’s by Boers – Dutch/Afrikaans for “farmers”. These travellers were from settlers from the western mainland Europe, most notably the Netherlands, northwest Germany and French Huguenots. The Great Trek itself led to the founding of numerous Boer republics, the Natalia Republic, the Orange Free State Republic and the Transvaal being the most notable.
