What’s happening on Sport Planet this weekend?

Logan Green, sports journalist, writes:

We always bring you the local sports happenings of the weekend in our communities, however, there are plenty of other sports, particularly in the professional arena, that draw us sports lovers to our television sets every weekend.

Every Friday our sports journalists will give you our opinions of the weekend’s sporting action.

Let’s take a look at some of the interesting games that will be played this weekend.

RUGBY

  • Golden Lions vs Free State Cheetahs, Ellis Park, Johannesburg, Saturday, October 11, 3pm, Absa Currie Cup:

Being a Joburg boy and all, you should know that my favourite team is the Golden Lions. My boys from Ellis Park have had a good campaign in the Currie Cup so far and lie in second place, behind Western Province. With the final round-robin match of the Currie Cup against the Free State Cheetahs taking place on Saturday, the Lions know that a home win against the Cheetahs will ensure a home semi-final next weekend, because should the Sharks win in Cape Town they will leapfrog the Joburg team into second place.

Logan’s prediction: 34-28 win for the Lions.

  • Western Province vs Sharks, Newlands, Cape Town, Saturday, October 11, 5.05pm, Absa Currie Cup:

WP is guaranteed a home semi-final and it is a sure thing that coach Allister Coetzee will field a second-string team against a Sharks team eyeing a home semi-final. Depending on the result in Johannesburg it remains to be seen how strong a team the Sharks field against Province.

Logan’s prediction: 38-14 win for the Sharks.

  • Blue Bulls vs Griquas, Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria, Saturday, October 11, 7.10pm, Absa Currie Cup

The Bulls have had a poor campaign by their extremely high standards and following a late surge in the round-robin stage, they have managed to just sneak into fourth place ahead of the Cheetahs and Pumas. A win is the only expected result for Frans Ludeke’s men at Loftus.

Logan’s prediction: 42-24 win for the Bulls.

FOOTBALL

  • Congo vs South Africa, Pointe-Noire, Republic of Congo, Saturday, October 11, 3pm, 2015 Afcon qualifying, Group A

With the international break putting a stop to the English Premier League (EPL) and Premier Soccer League (PSL) this weekend. All eyes are on qualifiers for the respective continental competitions. South Africans, though, will be glued to their TVs when Bafana Bafana aim to improve their chances of qualifying for the 2015 African Cup of Nations in Morocco when they play in the Congo on Saturday. Congo top Group A following two wins against Sudan and Nigeria, while Shakes Mashaba’s Bafana boys are in second place with four points after a win against Sudan and draw with Nigeria in their first qualifying games. Although I love Bafana and truly hope that they will win I think that the Congolese will be too strong for our boys at their home.

Logan’s prediction: 2-1 win to Congo.
