Strydom makes the double call

South African champion jockey Piere Strydom from Alberton has pulled off the double, when Siren’s Call won the Grade 2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas over 1 800m.

The second leg of the SA Triple Crown and Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara took place on Saturday March 28 at Turffontein Racecourse, where the racing fraternity enjoyed a fun-filled day at the race track.

Sliding past the strong field, Siren’s Call finished a nose-breadth ahead of Same Jurisdiction with Anton Marcus as the jockey to take home the R1 million for the Sean Tarry stable, and a double win for Strydom; the first was at the first leg of the Triple Tiara.

Siren’s Call scored her first Grade 1 win here and her fifth win from seven starts with two places. She took her earnings to R2 371 875, and looks ahead to the Grade 1 SA Oaks and history on Saturday April 25 at Turffontein and a R1 million bonus.

Jockey Piere Strydom said: “It felt like they were never going to get there. She takes forever to get going. I think the rain also helped to make it more testing as Same Jurisdiction had gotten away and quickened up well. I think that she switches off so well, she will stay the 2 450m. So that is one more leg and we are hoping!”

Trainer Tarry dominated the day when gelding French Navy, owned by Chris van Niekerk and bred by James Armitage, stormed through to win the R2 million SA Classic under Raymond Danielson 45 minutes, after courageous filly Siren’s Call, owned and Bred by Peter de Beyer, had won the SA Fillies Classic.

The Triple Crown will not be won by any horse this year as the only eligible horse in SA Classic, Harry’s Son, proved unsuited to the conditions and finished fifth.
