Dear Self Sufficient,
We also have a gas stove, portable lamps for light and other camping gear to use in load shedding situations. In winter, luckily the fridges and freezers are okay if left closed for the duration. However, there are silent generators and silencers for generators. Your generator sounds like a souped up Harley Davidson on steroids.
Since you are so bent on self-sufficiency, surely you would have done your homework and discovered that there are quieter generators. There is a generator next door to me and it is silent. In fact, I only hear that it is switched on if I open the window.
Also, incidentally, I do not object to you running your generator in the early evening load shedding period, from 17:30 to 20:30, but please then switch the generator off when the power returns. I am not sure if it is your generator, but there is a generator that often runs anywhere from half an hour to one and a half hours later after power has been restored.
