ALBERTON- When Joe do Carmo’s primary school teacher asked him what he wanted to do when he grew up, Joe told him he wanted to own a comic shop.

Ten years ago, Smallville Comics opened in Alberton City and, due to popular demand, another store opened on the corner of St Aubyn Road and Penzance Street in New Redruth, on February 28.

The opening day was a smashing success, with at least 90 people coming dressed in superhero outfits.“I needed more space for the patrons to gather and take part in events and that why this shop is perfect,” says Joe.

The shop boasts memorabilia and amazing collectibles for avid fans of the comics and superhero paraphernalia. “Children from neighbouring schools frequent the shop after school, playing Foosball and pinball. It is so much better than hanging around in the streets and many parents fetch their children from the shop. I am glad that they feel comfortable here.” adds Joe who clearly loves his store.

He is excited about his upcoming competition where people can dress up in costumes and visit the store. The three categories are: the u-14 section, the Western category which includes Superman, Batman and all the other well known characters. The third and most interesting category is the original section where people have to create their own characters from scratch.

The competition will be hosted on August 8, from 09:00 until 01:00, and patrons can expect 12 flea market stalls and interesting items on sale. “My aim is to grow this competition every year and just to have a lot of fun with the fans.”
