Varsity Cup fixtures announced

The Varsity Cup to start in all earnest in February 2016.

THE last two teams to have claimed the Varsity Cup title will go head to head in the blockbuster opening round when the 2016 Varsity Cup kicks off on Monday, February 8, 2016.

The first fixture of the ninth edition of the Varsity Cup will see last year’s beaten finalists, FNB NWU-Pukke, travel to Pretoria where they will try and repeat their victory at the same venue in the 2015 semifinal.

Three-time champions FNB Maties have four home games at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch where they will face FNB CUT, UP-Tuks, UFS-Shimlas and their local rivals, Ikeys, on a Valentine’s Day round of derbies with UP-Tuks taking on UJ and UFS-Shimlas and CUT squaring off in Bloemfontein.

The final round before the play-offs will take place on Human Rights Day, with some potentially crucial matches lined up as NWU-Pukke host Maties, the FNB NMMU Madibaz take on the Ikeys in the Monte Taljaard Trophy match, UFS-Shimlas travel to Johannesburg to face UJ and UP-Tuks go down to Bloemfontein to play CUT.

With UFS-Shimlas having gone unbeaten in last year’s competition they are sure to have a big target on their backs and will certainly have their work cut out for them to recreate their 2015 success.

With the excitement and innovation on and off the field set to be ramped up to new levels, the 2016 Varsity Cup is set to take student rugby to the next level.
