More Varsity Cup action

Steinhoff Koshuis Rugby Championship and FNB Varsity Young Guns join the competition.

MORE than 40 000 spectators made their way to the respective venues for the start of the 2016 FNB Varsity Cup.

The cup kicked off in full force on Monday, February 8, across the country. The second round of the FNB Varsity Cup will be played on February 15.

Two of the matches – FNB UP-Tuks vs FNB NWU-Pukke, and FNB UCT-Ikeys vs FNB UFS-Shimlas – were broadcasted on TV and fans rocked up in volumes to support their teams.

The first round also saw the very first nine-point try in world rugby scored by FNB NWU-Pukke flyhalf, Barend Jansen van Rensburg, where Pukke beat FNB UP-Tuks 38-15 in Pretoria.

“By implementing these new rules, such as the nine-point try, we are promoting a more positive brand of rugby at university level,” said Varsity Cup manager, Xhanti-Lomzi Nesi. “Our aim is to encourage more try scoring, more running, and less kicking by rewarding attacking rugby.”

As of February 15, the Steinhoff Koshuis Rugby Championship and FNB Varsity Young Guns presented by Steinhoff International join the competition, and fans are set for entertaining rugby that rocks.

Since its inaugural season in 2008, the crowd attendance has grown year on year, proving that Varsity Cup lives up to its sportainment culture. The Varsity Cup social media platforms were abuzz with fan photos and videos, from the various stadiums, of spectators enjoying the game as well as themselves.

Don’t miss out on the live action at any one of the 13 university stadiums around the country, with matches starting as early as 14:00.
