Antonio (16) is positive after accident

Antonio told the RECORD that he heard both of his legs breaking.

ANTONIO da Costa (16) will have to learn to walk again after he was injured in a motorcycle accident on Friday, March 18.

A motorist crashed into him on his way back from Hoërskool Marais Viljoen in Alberante, on the corner of Leipoldt and Opperman streets. It is still not clear exactly how the accident happened.

Antonio told the RECORD that when he was hit, he heard both of his legs breaking. “My whole body was on fire and I was in a lot of pain and I am still in pain.”

He said that he remembered lying there asking one of Fox Security’s officers to just knock him out, to be out of pain.

Despite his injuries and pain this young man’s positive outlook is very clear when he laughingly tells you: “My first thought was, that my holiday is ruined.”

He broke both his femurs and bruised his ribs. He was also operated on for three hours to place pins into both of his legs.

After three nights in ICU and eight days in the hospital, he is doing well. He was transferred to the Rehab Hospital in Auckland Park on Wednesday, March 30, where he will stay for a couple of weeks.

In an interview with the family they said that their son is not just missing school, but also went through a lot of pain.

“He and his sister, Charissa, are very close and are the ones who are keeping us going, because they are so positive and they have a great sense of humour,” said his mother Marelinda.

Antonio, who is very active and good in sport knows that for now, sport is out of the picture.

“I did not want to do this interview to get revenge, but I want to make people aware of bikers,” he said.

“People need to watch out for people on bikes, especially young ones. They must not be on their cellphones or fidget in their handbags or changing the radio. Motorists need to be aware that with basic observation, many dangerous situations can be avoided. It takes a second for an accident to happen,” said Antonio.
