Police give clarity on possible extension to amnesty

Brig Lawrence Nkgweng reportedly responded to a letter addressed to the minister regarding the extension.

According to AfriForum the SAPS has indicated that Police Minister Bheki Cele has approached the parliament regarding a possible extension to the amnesty period for the renewing of firearm licenses.

Brig Lawrence Nkgweng reportedly responded to a letter addressed to the minister regarding the extension. He indicated that Cele approached the parliament in writing with the relevant documentation.

The minister is now reportedly waiting on the portfolio committee of the police as well as the chosen committee on security and justice as the request needs to be seen by them before it can be taken to the National Council of Provinces and the National Assembly.

The response follows questions raised towards Cele by AfriForum about a possible extension after they identified that the state of lockdown prevented firearm owners from renewing their licenses.
