Keep your pets inside
Pets can also feel the cold, so consider to let them sleep inside the house.
ALBERTON SPCA urges pet owners to let their pets sleep inside the house during winter.
Vanja Ingold from Alberton SCPA explained that apart from being a deterrent to burglars, pets’ lives can also be threatened by severe temperature drops.
“According to research, burglars are less likely to break into a house where the dogs are inside, because they have no idea whereabouts the dogs will be. Dogs sleeping outside can be poisoned and therefore present no threat,” said Vanja. “In addition, if a dog only knows the yard or back garden as its territory it is less likely to defend the interior of the house and its occupants. Dogs can become possessive over their territory and attack their owners when they enter the yard, whereas by being allowed in the house they are less territorial.
“Dogs and cats can also feel the cold and therefore it is far kinder to let them sleep inside the house. It is also important to remember, that no matter what the temperature is, wind chill can threaten a pet’s life. Pets are sensitive to severe cold and are at risk of frostbite and hypothermia during extreme cold snaps.
“Exposed skin on noses, ears and paw pads can quickly freeze and suffer permanent damage. Cold weather also brings risks of malnutrition and dehydration. If you wouldn’t stay out in that weather, your pet shouldn’t either,” said Vanja.
