Beggars lives are in danger

The beggars sit in the middle of the road in Alberton

I’m a new resident in Alberton area and I am very concerned with the amount of people who skip robots, and beggars sitting in the middle of the streets.

The beggars sit in the middle of the road in Alberton, especially when you get off the freeway coming from Pretoria side as well as Ring Road East and West. The one has a growth on his stomach and the other one has crutches. They sit in the middle of the street on the white lines and beg. I have heard how many people have nearly run them over. They mostly wear black clothing, which makes it even worse.

They are there late, sometimes until 19:00 at night. I have heard lots of complaints from other Alberton residents as well. The Metro Police should remove them from the streets because they are at serious risk of being ridden over, and motorists who have to avoid hitting them are at risk too. My concern is if a person goes out to buy a bread and you don’t see them and you by accidently ride one of them over then you are up for murder!

There is also a woman with a baby sitting and begging. This is child abuse because the poor baby must be in the sun the whole day.

I hope that someone will take this seriously and do something about it.

The RECORD has contacted Child Welfare, as well as the EMPD for comment.

“We don’t remove the children; the community policing needs to intervene. Once they have removed the children the police must bring them to us so that we can investigate and put a plan of action together to assist the child concerned”, says Elmarie Kennedy, Director of Child Welfare.

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police did not respond to requests for comment.
