THE Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department’s (EMPD)K9 unit visited Alberton Remedial School, in Brackenhurst, on Friday, September 2, as a surprise for Casual Day.
The children were fascinated by the dogs and enjoyed every moment of it. The officers from the K9 unit showed them how they train their dogs and explained that each dog has a different job; one searches for drugs, another for firearms and yet another sniffs out suspects.
Shots were fired and the dogs sniffed out drugs, but the focus was on one of the officers, who pretended to be a suspect fleeing from the police. A dog was sent after him and dragged him down by his well-padded arm.
These dogs are well trained and totally disciplined.
According to Attie Fourie, one of the handlers, some of the officers take their dogs home if they can.
“It takes up to three months to train them. This is my passion and the thing about dogs is that, when there are shots fired or danger, people will run away, while the dog will take the bullet for you. I trust dogs more than people,” he said.
The school thanked the officers for taking time out of their busy schedules to visit them.
