Seniors look back at Alberton’s history
Heritage Society celebrated Heritage Day at retirement village.
THIS year, the Alberton Heritage Society kicked off celebrating Heritage Day early by visiting the Alberton Retirement Village with a presentation of Alberton’s history, by Annel Meyer.
Other topics that were discussed included the “Voortrekker Cemetery” and first town cemetery, the circular cemetery on the corner of Ninth Avenue and Hendrik Potgieter Street in Alberton North (the only cemetery in the world that also serves as a traffic circle), and the first qualified midwife, known as “Suster Boschie”.
Dries Herbst, a well-known resident of Alberton, treated guests to an exhibition of fascinating artefacts that he had on display. They also learnt from the Volkspelers what the Voortrekker attire looked like, while Ald Estelle Visser was dressed as a “Boerenooi”.
Another interesting presentation was that of old stamps and coins.
Dr Daan Grobler was the master of ceremonies and Beverley-Ann Small, the chairperson of the Alberton Heritage Society, thanked everybody for this opportunity.
