A PAIR of Alberton sisters, Carmen and Tyla Nepgen, have both progressed from the semi-finals of the National Model of the Year Competition, at the Roodepoort Youth Theatre on November 5.
Tyla is in grade 10 at Alberton High and will represent Figures Glenvista at the finals at the Roodepoort Civic Centre in mid-December, while Brackenhurst Primary School’s Carmen (in grade seven) will be there too, representing Figures Alberton.
There was a special category at the semi-finals for the debutantes, who collected R1 000 or more in cash or prize sponsorships. Both girls each received a beautiful crown and a debutante sash, plus Carmen also received the special trophy for senior survivor.
Tyla also took part in the cancer awareness fund raiser which was held on October 29, competing in the Face of Barlow World 2016, where she placed second.

Both sisters enjoyed success in two other categories this year: eisteddfods and horse riding.
At the Alberton Eisteddfod, Tyla received two item’s wins, six diplomas and six golds. Carmen placed second for vocals and fourth in the English drama section, walking away with two item winners, 10 diplomas and one gold.
“These results are remarkable, as they had to compete against more than 200 children in some of the the sections. The Alberton Eisteddfod received well over 15 000 entries over the last four years and to be placed in the top three in either the drama or vocal section, shows the dedication and determination of these young ladies,” said their proud mother Leonie Nepgen.
Tyla also attended the Equestrian Ekhuruleni prize giving, where she won awards for qualifying for the following provincial teams: dressage, performance riding, working riding, extreme equitation, equitation, working hunter, in-hand utility and English mounted games. She also received the Discretionary Trophy and another trophy for making the Top 10, ranking third in Ekhuruleni.
