Extraction of spruit water not allowed

"One needs a license or permission from the Department of Water Affairs as per the National Water Act before getting water from a spruit."

RECORD recently published a letter from one of several complainants who wrote that they often witness trucks extracting water from water sources and also trucks containing septic waste, emptying it into the same water sources.

“The City of Ekurhuleni was not aware of the septic tank dumping in a spruit, therefore more information indicating the location and times when this occurs, will assist in catching the culprit,” said Themba Gadebe, media spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

“One needs a license or permission from the Department of Water Affairs as per the National Water Act, before getting water from a spruit. Extraction of water from a resource for commercial purposes requires a water use license in terms of section 22 of the National Water Act.

“Pollution of a water resource is an offence in terms of Sect 151 (1)(i) of the National Water Act and carries a fine and imprisonment of up to five years,” added Gadebe.
