Baking for St Mary’s – you simply have to enter this one

Whether you are a skilled baker or just baking for the fun of it, this is your chance to show off your skills

CALLING all bakers. This is your chance to bake a gingerbread house and enter the competition in aid of St Mary’s Children’s Home.

The initiative comes from Alberton resident Sonja van Niekerk, and the rules are simple. A R50 entry fee is all you need and then you can put your skills to the test as either a fun baker or an experienced baker.

Gingerbread houses must be dropped off at 2 Bulshoek Street, Brackendowns, Alberton, by 13:00 on December 13.

The houses will stay at the premises, to be viewed by people visiting and dropping off things for St Mary’s Children’s Home until December 23, after which the winner will be chosen and announced in the newspaper in January 2017.

Winners will win bragging rights and a small prize, because the idea is to give as much as possible to St Mary’s.

After winners have been chosen, all entries may be collected and either taken home or donated to a charity.

“We did this last year as a family and donated our houses to an orphanage in Melville; the kids were so excited,” said Sonja

But there is more:

St Mary’s Children’s Home money boxes, as well as drop off boxes, will be kept on the premises from December 13 to December 23.

“We are planning on having a charity event at our home/pre-school for St Mary’s Children’s Home and would like to request the help of residents in the area, by asking them to lend us some of their unused Christmas lights, in order for us to brighten up the place, so it becomes an attraction,” added Sonja.

“We are also planning on having a Santa with whom children can take a photo, as well as a Christmas wish-list drop off postbox.

”We have already collected locked money boxes from St Mary’s and will be providing boxes for dropping off of clothes, food, blankets and toys.”

Should you wish to make a donation, lend your unused Christmas lights or take part in the Gingerbread House competition, you can contact Sonja on 084 678 4931.
