OVER the past few weeks, Cresco preschool has been teaching their children all about summer: fruit, flowers, trees, butterflies and most importantly, bees.
Many types of bees have been added to the endangered and threatened species list, including the well-known honey bee. Honey bees are responsible for the majority of pollination that occurs and without this (pollination), crop yields will decline and food production will decrease. The habitats of bees are being destroyed; and changes in climate also threaten their population. It’s important to raise awareness about the endangered status of bees and make every effort to conserve them.
The children at Cresco have learned the importance of saving bees and want to help protect them. By planting flowers that bees like, such as clover – and by avoiding the use of garden pesticides, you can help make a difference in your own home. Supporting local bee keepers is another way to help ensure the conservation of honey bees. Willy B’s Honey is a local business which sells honey products that you can support.
We need bees, but right now bees need our help. They play a significant role in fruit and vegetable production and humanity won’t survive for very long without them. So be thoughtful and “bee” like Cresco kids!
“If bees disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left. No more bees; no more pollination; no more plants; no more animals; no more man.” – Albert Einstein
