Alberton community generally supportive to SPCA

Christmas 2016 was good to the SPCA.

Once again the Festive Season was a busy time for the SPCA, with nearly one hundred dogs and cats admitted in the 10 day period between Christmas and New Year.

It was a hectic time and our staff worked flat out to assist those animals in need. Unfortunately, not all people had the festive season spirit and once again, our staff were subject to abuse. It does upset them and although they want to retaliate, they don’t; please remember to treat our staff with respect as they have a difficult job. The SPCA has to act inside the law and certain matters such as fireworks and barking dogs are the responsibility of the Metro, not the SPCA.

Sadly, a lot of strays haven’t been claimed and it’s vitally important to check in person at the SPCA if your pet is missing. While we do check the lost and found book against incoming animals, only an owner truly knows their pet. If your pet is still missing please come and check; we love reuniting pets and owners.

As usual, we ran our Christmas stand outside Pick n Pay and our thanks go to Mr Andreas Demetriou of Pick n Pay, Bracken City. Our ‘Tree of Light’ had 766 lights on by 24th December and thank you to everyone who supported us. We are still selling calendars at R40, so please pop by our offices in Lincoln Road, General Alberts Park to purchase yours.

We sent out an appeal before Christmas for dried dog food and the Alberton community was superb in responding to our needs. We had loads of donations for which we are very grateful – and send a big thank you to everyone who donated. We do try to email as many of you as possible, but some people just bring a donation and leave and we don’t have chance to thank them. Please note we appreciate each and every donation, whether big or small.

The staff and management committee would like to wish all Albertonians a very happy, healthy and cruelty free 2017.
