Matrics wait with bated breath

Matrics hope that their 2016 results will be finalised with about two weeks to go before the end of February.

THE RECORD has still not received feedback from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) regarding the Alberton Matric Project (AMP), even after sending multiple emails.

Madika Mofokeng, from the Communication and Media Relations Department, GDE did answer an email on February 7 saying that she is still working on getting a response from the officials working with the AMP. “As soon as I receive a response on the matter we will update you,” the email stated.

Questions still arising are: how many subjects are part-time students allowed to have? Six or seven?

GDE instructed the parents and learners from the project that learners are not allowed to have more than five subjects in a year.

A meeting was held on January 28 between the management at the part-time study centre in Randhart and the parents and learners who will be writing their matric exams in 2017. This year’s matric learners and their parents need clarity on how the 2016 problem will influence the class of 2017.

Again, management at the Randhart part-time study centre stressed that for the past four to five years the project had no problems but that, going forward, since the announcement on January 5, things will be difficult.

It was said by the management of the centre that when evening schools were rolled out a couple of years ago, with the aim of giving a second chance to those who could not do their matric through the normal schooling process, the Government Gazette of July 6, 2007 stated that part-time students – described as candidates not enrolled on a full-time basis at a school – may enrol for any number of subjects. With about two weeks to go until the end of February, learners from the AMP are still frustrated and stressed-out, because their lives cannot continue without their results – as some of them want to enrol at university.

A reliable source told the RECORD that the Randhart Centre was informed that their students will be allowed to enrol for seven subjects.

*The RECORD sent the GDE a further email on Thursday, February 9 with more questions regarding the number of subjects, but had not received comment at the time of going to press.
