Concerned resident talks health and safety

If you drive past there, you will see exactly what I am talking about and the catastrophic disaster that will occur if for some reason an incident or accident occurs there.

I am a concerned resident from Randhart Alberton concerned about the storage facilities in Hibiscus Road Alberton (General Alberts Park)/Alrode.

I work in Alrode and I have witnessed this storage depot go up from the foundation when they started to pour the concrete floor. I did not know at the time what was going to be erected on this site.

Since the concrete floor was poured and left to dry, every day when I drive past, I notice the number of drums, (steel and plastic) containers, that are currently being stored out in the open.

This is a huge concern as these drums are exposed to the elements, drive-by shootings from hooligans who just want to have some fun shooting at these drums, (as you see around Alberton – all speed cameras have been shot at) and also the risk of a forklift driver just bumping one of these stacks over.

There will be a domino effect and there will be oil and other liquids all over the place.

This is a disaster waiting to happen. I don’t know if any risk assessment was done in this regard, but it seems to me this is not the case.

Please look into this matter and address it with myself and other concerned Alberton residents via your Alberton Record newspaper.

There are residents living just one block away from this site. Just ask yourself the question: “What If?” and there are so many disturbing conclusions that jump to mind immediately.

If you drive past there, you will see exactly what I am talking about and the catastrophic disaster that will occur if, for some reason, an incident or accident occurs there. The drums are packed so extremely high. According to the health and safety regulations, one cannot exceed above three stacks high from the original (first stack). Some drums are stacked four high and more.

RECORD contacted the company in question for comment and received confirmation of our query, but received no comment other than being told that they will investigate the matter.
