St Mary’s girl needs mobile oxygen machine
“I’d really like to go back to school, to learn and be with my friends again, I miss them. I’d also like to go to the shops and to see a movie. My favourite food is Pizza, my drink Fanta orange, I enjoy watching comedy shows and I really miss going outside."

SEVENTEEN-year-old Thembisa, who lives in St Mary’s Children’s Home, was diagnosed with a disease eight years ago. “Her prognosis was not good at all, but God has a plan for her life and He has spared her for all of us,” said Sonja Harmse, director of the home.
Thembisa attended Frances Vorwerg School until the middle of last year, when her mobile oxygen machine began giving trouble and she had to stay at home indefinitely.
Not only can she not attend school, but she can’t leave St Mary’s. “She has to stay indoors connected to the oxygen here and hasn’t been out at all for months, not even onto the grounds of the home. The machine is not fixable, although we can replace the battery. A kind-hearted sponsor, André Wissler and his company, as well as another wonderful person have offered to replace the battery for us, but this isn’t a long-term solution and Thembisa needs a new machine desperately,” added Sonja.
A company has quoted R40 500 for a new machine, at a discounted price, which will get Thembisa back at school and out and about again. “Now we need a company or individuals to help make this dream come true for Thembisa. On top of her condition she’s also suffering from depression because she’s unable to join in anything with the other youngsters in the home, go to school or live a normal life,” Sonja said.
Thembisa said, “I’d really like to go back to school, to learn and be with my friends again. I miss them. I’d also like to go to the shops and to see a movie. My favourite food is pizza, my drink, Fanta Orange. I enjoy watching comedy shows and I really miss going outside.”
