Municipal issues piling up

It is well known that the roads are long overdue for a complete overhaul, instead of the millions spent on the patching up of potholes that simply open up again after the next rains and/or a truck or two going over them.

WITH the recent rains, one issue within the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has been resolved, but many more have arisen.

The rains have lightened the load in terms of the water shortage in Ekurhuleni, but the same rains have also highlighted problems with infrastructure and lack of maintenance that are causing a great deal of damage to roads (and in turn cars) and residents’ homes.

OVERFLOW: Another blocked drain that worsened the effects of flooding.

It is well known that the roads are long overdue for a complete overhaul, instead of the millions spent on the patching up of potholes that simply open up again after the next rains and/or a truck or two going over them.

GROSS: A blocked drain at a complex in Meyersdal causes a stink as sewage overflows and spreads further with the rain, causing hygiene concerns.

Yet another issue is the constantly blocked drains and lack of stormwater drains, which means that flooding is much more likely as the water has nowhere to go – and this causes vast amounts of damage.

UNNECESSARY: A water leak leading to countless litres of water being wasted.

Water leaks also come to mind. These negate the benefits of all the rain we have received, as much of it just goes to waste again due to these leaks.

DAMAGE: Residents are of the opinion that, if the drainage system were properly maintained, flooding might not have caused such severe damage.

One prime example is that of the leaks in Alrode South, leading to water running down several streets, including Bosworth and Statler.

WHAT A WASTE: The combination of a blocked drain and a water leak leads to this.

“Water is still running down Statler Street from the main supply to Thokoza. It’s been running for a few weeks and although I’ve reported it, nothing has been done about it,” says Peter Habib, who works in the area. “Do we have sufficient water not to worry about this wastage? The other thing is a brand- new fence which was erected recently around the reservoir in Statler Street and it’s been stripped by vagrants to sell for scrap,” adds Habib.

WASTE: One of several streets in Alrode South down which water runs for hundreds of metres due to a water leak.
