Clinic offers free circumcision

Come to the AMCARE Injabulo Clinic for a free circumcision or HIV test.

INJABULO Clinic, which works hand-in-hand with AMCARE, is inviting males above the age of 10 to come in for free circumcision and HIV testing.

For boys aged 10 and younger, the cost of a circumcision is R500 as the services of a specialist doctor are required to carry out the procedure on children this young.

Dr Laeticia Murray, from Injabulo Clinic, said: “R500 is still very little to pay as a circumcision at a hospital would cost around R3 000. We are offering this at an affordable rate and the procedure is very beneficial to a man’s health.”

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin. The healing process requires about three days off at school/work, but four to six weeks to fully heal.

The benefits of circumcision, according to research provided by Sister Murray, include:

  • Cleaning the penis is much easier.
  • Urinary tract infections are less likely for a child.
  • Prevention of inflammation of the glans and foreskin.
  • Some sexually transmitted infections are less likely.
  • Becoming infected with HIV is less likely.
  • Penile cancer in men and cervical cancer in women (sexual partners) is less likely.

Injabulo Clinic is also looking to offer new services from May. These include occupational health screenings and women’s health services, such as family planning, pap smears and breast examinations. These services are not necessarily free, but always as affordable as possible, according to Dr. Murray.
