Fifty year reunion for cast of Snow White play

The script was created by the late Mona Hammond and the music was adapted to the play by the late Anne Mess.

On Saturday, April 29, members of the New Redruth Childrens’ Theatre and ex-learners of the then Alberton English Medium School (AEMS), now known as Alberton Primary School, celebrated the 50th anniversary of the staging of Snow White and the Dwarfs at the school.

Some of the cast had not seen each other for over 50 years and travelled from various parts of the country, even from as far as Cape Town, to be present at the reunion.

Members of the cast present at the reunion were: Connie Rogers (Araujo) – Snow White, Bruce Carter – Prince Florizel, Veronica Bekker (Koch) – The Queen, Peter (Yoti) Loizos – The Forester, Elizabeth Powrie (Haines) – Dwarf, Val Jensen – Dwarf and Mary Goslin (Haines) – Dwarf.

THE CAST FROM WAY BACK WHEN: Names of dwarfs in front row not available; Back row: Veronica Bekker (Koch) – Queen, Bruce Carter – Prince Florizel, Connie Rogers (Araujo) – Snow White, Peter (Yoti) Loizos – Forester.

The script was created by the late Mona Hammond and the music was adapted to the play by the late Anne Mess. Both the aforesaid were prominent teachers at the AEMS.

Mona Hammond was well-known for various stage productions she produced over the years, in which the cast of Snow White played numerous roles.

The guest of honour present at the reunion was Alex Pullinger, the former deputy principal of the AEMS and the school’s only known living staff member.

Bruce Carter surprised everyone by wearing his original Prince costume from the play and sharing his photos of the play with the group. Connie Rogers brought the original script along, Elizabeth Powrie brought slides taken way back when and Pullinger wore his school blazer with the old school emblem of those times. “It certainly was an emotional, nostalgic and amazing trip down memory lane for all those present,” said Yoti Loizo, one of the organisers and cast member of the play.
