More and more unemployed people are in need of help
More and more people come looking for help with the unemployment rate rising in Eden Park.
IT is often reported in the media about how life has become very expensive, especially for the poor, and how this is aggravated by the high and rising burden of unemployment.
Eden Park is one of those unfortunate areas where unemployment is on the rise. With about 60 per cent of the residents unemployed, families are finding it more and more difficult to put food on their tables.
Moira Snyders, a kind and humble lady in Hillman Street, took it upon herself two years ago to start a feeding scheme for needy and destitute families in the area. She and her helpers, who call themselves Women of Destiny, are seeing the need increase – the scheme is just growing bigger and bigger, with more families coming to them for help.
“We are now not only giving a plate of cooked food, but we also give out groceries which last for three months. The groceries are supplied by an organisation based in Ekurhuleni.
“The cooked food we give out to pensioners and grant recipients, as we are still maintaining our vision of aiding the unemployed and destitute families in our area,” Moira explained.
Many of the recipients of groceries expressed their gratitude towards Women of Destiny for what they do.
“We are grateful to Moira and her helpers for we now have good food on the table. The groceries are like manna to the Israelites in the desert,” said one unemployed mother who asked not to be named.
