UNEMPLOYMENT and a lack of RDP houses for many Alberton residents has become a major headache for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. The residents of Eden Park, Phola Park, Greenfield and Thokoza need houses.
Eden Park Community Action Unit (ECAU), together with the Business Forum, started at the beginning of June to register all the residents from Eden Park and its surrounds who are awaiting RDP houses.
The registration was done at the Eden Park Hub next to the police station. The hub had a long queue of residents waiting, with their documents, to register every time the doors were opened.
“By today, June 21, we have already registered about 2 000 applicants. Our mission here is to start and have a database of the residents waiting for houses. There is a huge need for RDP houses and we want people to register,” said Minah Booysen of the ECAU.
“We hope to have discussions with the speaker of the EMM and to meet the Gauteng MEC for housing with a sound and factual database concerning our area. Two years ago about 3 500 RDP houses were supposed to have been built, but up to now, not a single one has been erected. We want to show the MEC how many people need houses,” said Booysen.
Registrations closed on Friday, June 23, 2017.
